White is the color of purity, innocence, cleanliness, and simplicity. White can represent a new start, a clean slate, or the contrast to pay special attention to something specific. White provides hope and clarity, promotes self reflection and open mindedness. It is serene and calming. Perfection. Other worldly. It instills goodness, and a vision for the future being bright.

When I was younger I was a little scared of moths. While I found their wings lovely and earthy, sometimes stunned by their unique patterns, I was worried about their thick bodies slamming against me in the dark. They would fly so clumsily and clunk into anything on their quest for something bright and beaming in the absence of the sun. I can specifically recall times of marveling through the screen door with the porch light on, many moths flocking to the light.

To me, a moth is a creature of the night in search of the light; without fear. They are connected to the moon, and dance it its light. Moths like butterflies, are symbols of transformation, change, from the ground and into flight. Their life is a beautiful dance of change, and they find solace in the dark that surrounds them. This is what really speaks to me about the moth. The white moth in this painting, and in my mind, is the ultimate dichotomy. How can a creature dressed in its white blanket, navigate the depths in which other creatures retreat? Inherently the cloak of night speaks to the unknown, the abyss, the depths in which we would rather not go. The luna moth in this way, is the ultimate sign of hope, freedom, and bravery.  Emerging from a long slumber of chrysalis, to rejoice in wings, to navigate in moonlight.

When you can illuminate the dark pathway of your life, hours spent in sunlight are just as meaningful as walking in the night.
