The Burning Desert

Perfect gradients of colors weave together above our heads. We've not spent many nights together beside the earth this way. When traveling in the desert I've had no fixed plans. I've not been intent on arriving at the cactus in bloom, of red and pink. In the heat of the sun, the warmth of the ground radiates up towards my hands. It burns. I am on fire. My beating chest bursting through the seams of my skin. I breath deeply through the pain of what it means to be alive and I continue to marvel at the sky. Here in the smothering light and parched landscape, personal safety is being soft and opening. Standing here, my heart grows roots. They tangle to my body and reach down into the earth below me. With you here, I am unyielding, my most true form. I intertwine into the barren landscape beyond my feet. You let your body melt into the sand with mine.  Our roots are found together. As day turns to night you understand your place here; your heart nothing but a burning desert too.
